more like access issue.

ASOS… Marshall’s…. Ross…. TJ Maxx… AMAZON… Macy’s…

It is not hard to find slacks, button up, or a cheap suit…

That access issue is OLD and out dated in modern times. EVERYONE has a phone. Kids literally wearing designer shoes. Weaves and hairdos cost $200+… haircuts are damn near $50+ also.

Here you guys go with excuses again.

Have you guys seen some of these prom pictures lately???

We are in a lazy, athleisure, “slides and socks” society.

Being in your early/mid-30s is not “old” by any means and it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have fun. However, you shouldn’t be that age specifically traveling to hang out with college aged kids. Full stop.
Unless you’re a student, have school aged kids or work in education, I don’t see why someone in their 30s is vacationing for Spring Break.

… just giving you an example of how some of these late teens to late 20s think :lol :lol
But all jokes aside, I expect them to think like that. I did too to an extent at that age.

The problem is, and this ain’t directed at you, it seems like because of social media people in their 30s do in fact care a LOT about what the late teens/early 20s ppl think and wanna be one of them.

Bingo. Never would I have an imagined, people that have lived longer, started caring about what the youth thinks about them. This is why I say the world has flipped.

Growing up, our elders didn’t care what we thought. It was the other way around.

This is the craziest thing about modern times. A lot these adults letting kids/the youth dictate their moves :lol :lol

My grandfather ain’t give a damn about anything I was talking about:lol

This is a GEN Z and beyond issue. And I’m laughing my *** off at the prospect’s of the future workforce :lol :lol
I don't think this is a Gen Z issue either.

I remember going to job fairs 25 years ago and people dressing like bums as well.

It's definitely not a generational thing either.

The job & dress thing is nonsense. It's really about following the rules of the people in power.

The people in power didn't care years ago at the start of the tech boom when the Amazons and Googles of the world held job fairs and the explicit instructions were to NOT wear a suit, but instead dress casually so you seemed to fit in with the people that worked there.

So the whole "wear a suit!" thing isn't right. It's about taking a step back and realizing you (if you're nonwhite) have to figure out what the people in power want to see, and do that thing, wear that thing or be that thing.

And the people in power can change that up at any time to fit whatever they feel like doing, cause they have the power.

more like access issue, give them access to donated suits and dresses etc, you can have a slight advantage.

“Access issue”……….stop it champ. Same way these kids line up in front DTLR/Foot Locker/SNIPES or anything else in between for Jordan’s ……..they can line up early in the morning for a suit/dress in front of Goodwill (something donated) or a K&G to a Macy’s. Stop making excuses for a bad behavior.

Sure, it isn't fair/right/equitable that those in control get to tell us peasants what to do and we are forced to follow their rules that they don't even always follow themselves. I can agree to that. It is what it is.

However, if you know better you have to do better. We live in this system where we need to be hired to make a living. At that point nobody gives a damn about what's fair/right; you just have to play the game.

So dress for the occasion to Maximize your earning potential. If that's too much for you (not YOU) to do then carve out your own lane to make some $.

Otherwise, do what's smart and just throw on "the white man's clothes." (If that's how you (not you) want to view it)

Were they applying for a tech job? And do we even know for sure none of them got the job?

But they also make generational wealth. I dunno what jobs the people in DC's video were going for. Anybody know?

Generational wealth means don’t bathe and walk around unkempt? Rich and funky, poor and funky… you’re going to judge that poor person I bet, but not the rich person. That’s EXACTLY the problem.

Ya’ll let Bankman-Fried’s and Madoff’s feel above everything because of “wealth”. It’s exactly why we have people like Trump running rampant. Like wealthy people can’t be held accountable for having bad hygiene:lol :rollin

Ya’ll say some shameful stuff man :lol :lol

Sounds like the type they can be easily bought. Those same people look down upon people like you.

Wait, what do you think I'm saying

My point is that the people in power set the culture. Back in the day if you were a programmer or tech person that wanted to get a job at msft or amazon or google and you showed up in a suit and tie, you got looked at as someone who didn't fit. But the people with the money who were doing the hiring were fine if you showed up looking like you just woke up and rolled into the interview like you just woke up out of bed.

You wouldn't do it, I wouldn't do it, but it is what it is. It's about fit, or was, for some organizations.

The point we’re making is doing it for YOU. Not the job. Not the company. Build the habits for yourself. Then people look around and wonder why the standards of everything is out of wack. People want the nice things and finer things in life… but don’t even take care of the bare basics.

Those same kids probably want exotic cars, a penthouse or nice home. How are you going to take care of something extravagant, and of significance if you can’t even take care of YOU :lol :lol

Even animals try to make themselves look presentable during mating season.

I want the 6-figure job, $100,000 car and home with the big lawn… but I can’t even dress the part for the day or for a job

Agreed with all of that. Have some personal pride. We'd ultimately get back to the whole discussion of who has to do what. Sucks that white guys who are unkempt can roll into a job interview (or onto a movie screen) looking like they just came from the back yard playing with their dog, and get the job, the role, the press, the promotion, the house, the car, everything. But .. (and this is where people would rehash the whole "well of COURSE we have to do more in this society")

I just like to point it out (the job thing). Same thing we were talking about a few pages back with the names. If ja'queeta was a name common to white woman in Switzerland, it wouldn't be a problem to have that name and get a job. But we want to shame and make fun of people who give their kids that name, or make fun of kids showing up to a job interview like in that video.

But if the people in power's parents and relatives had durags on so much it was commonplace to see them in any setting like a yarmulke or something, they'd get the job. The hiring managers would watch the video and go "so?"

So now we arrive at the "both things can be true" place.

It's absolutely true that all this stuff should be unremarkable, and your ability to do whatever job that was is almost surely unrelated to you putting a stocking cap on your head or wearing clothes with one material vs another material. Billionaires make that completely evident every single day when they show up to give talks, hold meetings, give teleconferences, make appearances and do interviews with the media looking like they just rolled out of bed and threw on the first thing they could find.

At the same time, reality is reality, and if you are looking for a job, aka you don't have power in this situation, then you absolutely have to figure out how to do whatever you need to do to get whatever job you want to get. If that means wearing a suit you wear a suit.

I just want black folks to realize that we ALSO had beauty standards before we ever encountered white people.

Change that suit for a nice dashiki or nice tribal outfit. IT’S THE SAME THING!

I hate how we equate having style or standards = trying to appease white people. Like heck no, you think an African chief is going to let you have his daughters hand in marriage looking any old kind of way? Heck no.

That’s the part that annoys me. Black folks always trying to conceptualize decorum as being a “white” thing.

Every culture has standards of respect and representation
